Should You Repair or Replace Your Air Conditioner?

Posted on September 19, 2014

There comes a point usually at least once where homeowners have to make a decision on whether to repair their air conditioning units or replace them altogether. It can be difficult to discern whether it would be a better solution in the long run to pay less now for repairs or pay more now for a new unit. Although there are several factors that come into play that must be considered when making this decision, there are a few that are extremely important and should never be ignored. Following are some of the most pressing questions to ask yourself when trying to decide what to do:

  1. Is my air conditioning unit functioning at all? If it isn’t running constantly and the airflow is adequate and still cold, a repair is probably the best option to fix odd noises or low R-22 refrigerant levels, or to have a minor part repaired, if that’s what is needed. In contrast, of course, if the air is not cool or the unit runs constantly (or has stopped running completely), a Palm Springs air conditioning service from the experts at General Air Conditioning & Heating should be called to determine whether it should be replaced.
  1. How old is my current unit? The age of your unit and cost of the replacement is another consideration that has to be made. If your unit is at 75% of its life expectancy or is over 10 years old, it is strongly advised to replace it. When units are this old, the efficiency of them all but goes out the window, and the chances of a breakdown (in the heat of summer) increase with age. Take into account what the cost of a replacement part would be; once an issue has been diagnosed, if the cost of a new part would be more than 1/3 of the cost of replacing the entire unit, you should ideally replace the unit altogether.
  1. How well has my current unit been serviced? Consider the history of your current unit. If it’s been neglected, never having yearly preventive maintenance tune-ups (or if you’ve just purchased a home and don’t know), chances are good that a replacement is the right choice. On the other hand, if the unit really hasn’t given you problems in the past and preventive tune-ups have been done each year, you may want to consider air conditioning repair in Indio instead.
