Try These Troubleshooting Tips If Your HVAC System Isn’t Working Properly

Posted on June 16, 2016

It’s summertime, and that means sweltering temperatures are not far behind. Is your home’s air conditioning system ready for the heat? One way to make sure is call The General to schedule regular maintenance, better known as a tune-up. In the meantime, if you think your system is not working efficiently or correctly, you can perform some HVAC troubleshooting to help figure out the problem.

Consider performing these troubleshooting tasks/tips if your system will not turn on or if the air conditioner is not cooling properly:

  • A bad thermostat could be the problem and here’s how to check it. Verify the temperature and make sure that the thermostat is set to the A/C position and turned to the on position. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, you may need thermostat replacement.
  • Make sure your system is getting electricity. First, verify the breaker has not been tripped on the outside condensing unit and then check the emergency switch on the blower to make sure it has not been accidentally shut off. If the breaker is tripped, try resetting it. If it trips again, you may have a wiring/technical issue that requires service from a qualified technician. Call us for immediate
    service before trying again.
  • Your system could be low on refrigerant or have a leak. One sign is ice on your outdoor unit or refrigeration line. If you see ice, turn the system off at the thermostat and put it in fan mode to thaw out; your service technician cannot work on units if they are frozen.
  • Perhaps the easiest troubleshooting task is to make sure the air filter has been recently changed and/or cleaned. This promotes better airflow and system efficiency.

You tried to troubleshoot the problem and nothing worked? Give The General a call for service and remember: nothing replaces regular maintenance for keeping your system in top shape.
