Stop Pulling Your Hair Out Over Electric Bills

It was a peaceful family evening at the home in Palm Desert. Then the mood changed suddenly. There was tension in the air. Was it a disagreement about what to watch on TV? Nope, just another gigantic electrical bill from running the air conditioner. General Air Conditioning & Plumbing wants you to know you can fight back. Despite our desert heat, there are some things you can do to save energy.

  • Install a programmable thermostat

If you don’t have one yet, now is the time to get one. If you do have one, call the General so we can make sure you are using it correctly. Consumer Reports recommends the following settings for air conditioning:

  • 78℉ When you are home
  • 85℉ While at work or away from home
  • 82℉ While sleeping

You will save about 3% for every degree you raise the temperature. If you are used to keeping the house colder, try raising the temperature a little bit a time. Soon your body will adjust and you’ll be surprised how cool 78 degrees feels when it’s 100+ outside.

  • Pay attention to doors & empty rooms:

Always be extra careful to keep outside doors tightly closed. The Generals knows it can be difficult if you have children going in and out, but impress on them how important it is. If you have rooms you don’t use, keep the doors to them shut and close the air conditioning vents. You are just wasting money by keeping them cool.

  • Use ceiling fans or consider installing them:

They create an indoor “wind chill” effect and will make you feel cooler. It may work so well, you can raise the thermostat another degree or two. The fans will also improve your air circulation.

  • Maintenance & Tune-ups:

Study after study shows you can’t just ignore your air conditioner and expect it to cool efficiently. Regular maintenance visits by a General’s technician can lower cooling costs and prevent more expensive repairs. Something as simple as replacing filters on a regular basis can save 5-15% every month.

  • Curtains, Blinds & Shades:

When completely closed, they can reduce heat gain inside the home by nearly half (45%). For best results use light colored blinds and shades to reflect the sunlight.

So, don’t just throw your arms up in frustration when you see the monthly utility bills. Fight back. If you need help, call General Air Conditioning & Plumbing, serving air conditioning needs in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and across the Coachella Valley.
