Add this resolution to the list: a more efficient HVAC system

Posted on January 5, 2017

Here’s the thing about New Year’s resolutions: they are made with the best of intentions but sometimes end up being hard to fulfill. A prime example is the old standby: I resolve to lose weight in the coming year. The typical list of New Year’s resolutions begins there and quickly grows: exercise more and eat healthy (by-products of the weight-loss resolution), bank more money, don’t complain about things I can’t control, don’t nag at my husband for watching sports on TV (Mrs.), or watch less sports on TV so I can spend more time with my wife (Mr.).

Those are all commendable goals, but how about adding this to the list: resolving to make your home more efficient and safer, which can help keep your family healthy and lead to improved quality of life?

A good way to get started is to make a checklist:

  • Check smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors; change batteries if it’s been more than a few months since you last checked them.
  • If you don’t have low-level CO alarms, don’t wait any longer: install them or ask one of our professional technicians to install them for you. Educate yourself about the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning… the life you save may be your own or that of a loved one.
  • Incidentally, how is the air quality in your home? If your answer is “I don’t know,” you are not alone. The good news is General Air Conditioning & Plumbing can help you answer that question by testing your indoor air quality (IAQ). An IAQ test can quickly identify pollutants like mold, dust and airborne allergens and help determine if your ductwork needs to be professionally cleaned.

The General can also install whole home air purification systems and humidifiers to make the air you breathe cleaner and you and your family healthier.

Once your home is safer, we can focus on making it more efficient. One of the best ways to do that is with a new Wi-Fi enabled thermostat. It’s like a programmable thermostat, only better, and allows you to control your heating and cooling system by remote using your mobile device.

For instance, say you left home for two weeks during the holidays. Naturally, you turned the heat way down to save a few bucks on the heating bill. Of course, this means it will be a tad bit cool when you get home. No worries… on your way home you use your smartphone to turn the temp up on that wifi programmable thermostat. Your home will be nice and cozy when you arrive. Or if you left home in a hurry and realized 100 miles down the road you forgot to turn the heat down, you can fix that problem as well.

A wifi thermostat will also give you something that’s hard to put a price tag on: peace of mind. If you’re out of town and a wicked winter storm hits, you can increase the temperature to avoid potential frozen pipes and other cold-weather issues.

Give us a call today or come by our office to find out which programmable wifi thermostat is a good fit for your system and how it can help you save money in the long run.

Also, if you’re going to go with either one of those TV sports resolutions, it may be a good idea to wait until AFTER the Super Bowl.
