AC Metrics: 101 – Know Your Air Conditioner Unit

Posted on February 7, 2014

In order to keep your air conditioner unit running smoothly, it can’t hurt to get better acquainted with it. So sit back, have a cup of coffee, and have a one-on-one with your system. There’s a lot to learn, but let’s start off with how your air conditioning unit measures its capacity.

AC capacity is measured in tons, though obviously it’s vastly different since it’s not very comparable to, say, a semi-truck. With air conditioning, a ton refers to the amount of heat the system can remove from a home or office within an hour. That is measured by dividing the heat absorbed by melting ice per day by 24 (as in the hours in a day). There are some complications with measuring, however, since AC capacity is not static. As a result, the tonnage capacity is nominal.
